In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET) is a two-part assisted reproductive technology procedure performed as an infertility treatment at Southern California Reproductive Center (SCRC), a top fertility clinic.

The IVF Process

Inducing Ovulation

IVF (in vitro fertilization) requires the female partner to receive a series of injections of potent fertility drugs, which induce ovulation. These fertility medications, such as clomiphene citrate (Clomid®), cause her ovaries to produce several mature eggs (oocytes) at the same time as opposed to just one in a normal, unmedicated menstrual cycle. This enables the woman an increased chance of conceiving, and the ability to select the most viable embryos by an assisted reproductive technology we perform in our IVF lab called PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis).

Egg Retrieval and Fertilization

Egg retrieval proceeds by removing the oocytes from the ovaries under light sedation using an intravaginal aspiration process that takes just a few minutes to perform. A semen specimen is obtained from the male partner, and eggs and sperm are combined in the IVF laboratory. Within three to six days, embryos developing from this process are evaluated, and some are selected for embryo transfer (ET).

3-D/4-D Ultrasound-guided Embryo Transfer (ET): Watch us implant your embryo in real time!

Under ultrasound guidance with 3-D/4-D real-time technology (the most precise way to transfer embryos), the embryos are instilled into the uterus via a thin, flexible plastic tube, which is gently passed through the opening in the cervix leading to the interior of the uterus. You literally get to watch the embryo transfer into your uterus as it happens! In about 12 days, a blood test for pregnancy is performed to determine whether the transfer resulted in a pregnancy.
