Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

What is an IUI?

IUI is a simple fertility treatment where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization. It’s often used for couples dealing with mild male factor infertility, unexplained infertility, or same-sex couples using donor sperm. It’s a low-intervention, in-office procedure that can help bridge the gap between timed intercourse and IVF.

A Gentle First Step Toward Parenthood

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a low-complexity fertility treatment designed to enhance your natural chances of conception. Ideal for individuals or couples facing mild fertility challenges or using donor sperm, IUI offers a non-invasive way to help sperm reach the egg at just the right time.

How It Works

During an IUI cycle, medication may be used to stimulate ovulation. Once ovulation is detected, sperm is washed and concentrated, then placed directly into the uterus via a thin catheter. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is done in-office—no anesthesia needed.

Who Benefits From IUI

  • Mild male factor infertility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Single parent by choice
  • LGBTQ+ family building using donor sperm

What to Expect

IUI is timed with ovulation, either naturally or with medications. The process is relatively quick, and patients can resume daily activities immediately after. A pregnancy test is typically scheduled two weeks after the procedure.

FAQs

  • How long does an lUl procedure take?

The actual IUI procedure usually takes just 5–10 minutes in the office. However, your overall visit may be 60-90 minutes to allow for semen preparation and monitoring.

  • Is IUI painful?

Most patients describe IUI as quick and relatively painless, similar to a Pap smear. You may feel mild cramping that goes away shortly after the procedure. Cramping later on in the day is also normal.

  • How many IUIs should I try before moving to IVF?

On average, fertility specialists recommend 3 IUI cycles before considering IVF, though the best approach depends on your age, diagnosis, and medical history. IUI success rates are significantly lower than IVF, please ask your doctor if you are a good candidate.

  • Do I need to take fertility medications with IUl?

Some patients undergo IUI during a natural cycle, while others take oral or injectable fertility medications to increase success rates. Your doctor will tailor the plan to your needs.

  • What are the success rates for lUl?

IUI success rates vary by age and fertility diagnosis. On average, the chances range from 10–20% per cycle, with higher rates in younger women or when fertility medications are used.
