How to Use Your Insurance at SCRC

  1. Check your fertility benefits. Not every health plan covers fertility treatment, even if you have medical insurance. Contact your insurance provider or HR team to confirm whether your plan includes infertility benefits and what’s covered.
  2. Get a referral if your plan requires one. Some plans need a referral or authorization from your primary care physician before your first visit.
  3. Let us verify your coverage. When you schedule, share your insurance information, and your partner’s if applicable. Before your first appointment, we’ll email you a summary of your benefits and follow up with a call to answer any questions.
  4. Review your plan with a financial counselor. We’ll walk you through what’s covered, what isn’t, and your options for any remaining costs.

California’s IVF Coverage Law (SB 729)

As of January 1, 2026, California’s SB 729 requires many large-group health plans to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment, including IVF. If your employer has 101 or more employees and offers a fully insured, state-regulated health plan, your coverage may now include:

  • Up to three completed egg retrievals, with unlimited embryo transfers
  • Infertility diagnosis and treatment, with cost-sharing that matches your other medical benefits
  • An inclusive definition of infertility that covers LGBTQ+ individuals and single parents by choice

Coverage starts at your plan’s first renewal on or after January 1, 2026, so timing varies by employer. The law doesn’t require coverage from self-funded employer plans (though some choose to add it), small group plans, or Medi-Cal. Our team can help you find out whether your plan is affected.

TriWest Referrals and Authorizations

SCRC accepts TriWest. Eligible veterans and military families who come to us through a TriWest referral and authorization can receive fertility care at SCRC, and our team will guide you through every step so you can focus on your care instead of paperwork.

What sets SCRC apart

  • Dedicated navigation. A member of our patient care team helps coordinate your referral and authorization once you’re connected with us.
  • Care under one roof. Your consultation, monitoring, procedures, and embryology lab services all take place with SCRC, so you can use your authorized TriWest benefits for your full course of care at SCRC, including our in-house embryology lab.
  • Clear guidance on every option. If some services fall outside your authorization, we’ll walk you through self-pay, financing, and grant options.

How the referral process works

  1. Talk to your provider. Ask your primary care provider or care team whether fertility care through a referral is right for you.
  2. Your provider submits a referral. If you’re eligible, your provider requests a referral to a fertility specialist.
  3. Authorization is reviewed. Your referral is processed through TriWest, and an authorization outlining your approved services is issued.
  4. SCRC reaches out. Once we receive your authorization, our team contacts you to schedule your first consultation.
  5. Your care plan begins. Your SCRC specialist reviews your history, completes testing, and builds a plan around your authorized services.

Common questions

Do I need a referral before contacting SCRC?

If you plan to use TriWest benefits, yes. Your provider starts the process. Talk to your provider to see if this route is right for you.

What if I’m not eligible, or only some services are approved?

You still have options. Our financial counselors can walk you through self-pay pricing, financing plans, and grant programs, including grants for veterans with service-connected fertility challenges.

What does my TriWest authorization cover?

Coverage depends on your specific benefits and authorization. Our team will review what’s approved with you before treatment starts, so there are no surprises.
